Thermal losses are responsible for energy wastage in a building, mainly through roofs, walls, and floors. In France, over 45% of our energy is lost due to this phenomenon. Every time there is a temperature difference between the inside and outside of a building, heat naturally escapes to balance that difference—much like seeking a warm blanket on a freezing night. This not only reduces comfort but also leads to excessive energy consumption.

To improve this situation, it is essential to tackle the source of these losses through renovations that reduce thermal leakage. A well-insulated building is key to creating a comfortable and energy-efficient indoor environment.

This largely depends on their thermal “skin”, meaning the heat transfer coefficient of the building materials. This coefficient is measured by the U-value, an indicator that evaluates a material’s ability to conduct heat. The lower the U-value, the more effective the material is at reducing thermal losses.

However, a dilemma arises when trying to make buildings more resistant to heat loss while staying within budget. How can we find the right balance between energy performance and renovation costs?
