Heritage Rehabilitation and Energy Improvement in the Alpes-Maritimes

In Valbonne, in the Alpes-Maritimes department, transforming an old house always involves a delicate balance between preserving architectural character and adapting to contemporary uses.

DAIMON Design, a Franco-Italian architecture firm based on the French Riviera, oversaw the rehabilitation and extension of a house built at the beginning of the 20th century, located near the center of Valbonne. The intervention involved both the restoration of the existing structure (160 m²) and the creation of a contemporary extension of 90 m².

Context: rehabilitate without erasing

The original house had the typical characteristics of early 1900s constructions in the region: compact volumes, rendered facades, proportioned openings and partitioned interior organization. The challenge was not to radically transform the building’s identity, but to:
  • significantly improve energy performance,
  • adapt the spaces to current uses,
  • increase the living area without unbalancing the initial composition.
In a context like Valbonne — where land pressure is high and urban planning regulations are strict — extending an existing house requires a detailed reading of the local urban plan and precise control of authorized volumes.

Energy Rehabilitation and Thermal Upgrade

The renovation of the building envelope improved the overall thermal performance while preserving the structural architectural elements. The facades were restored with materials compatible with the historic building. The chosen colors are part of the local palette, ensuring visual continuity with the immediate environment. The intervention focused on:
  • optimized insulation of the envelope,
  • improvement of joinery,
  • treatment of thermal bridges,
  • rationalization of technical systems.
This approach is part of the expertise developed by DAIMON Design in energy rehabilitation, reinforced by CASA CLIMA certification.

Contemporary Extension: 90 m² in Dialogue with the Existing

The extension mainly houses a new day area and an kitchen open onto the interior courtyard. Rather than a brutal formal contrast, the project adopts a logic of controlled continuity:
  • sober volumetry,
  • proportions consistent with the original building,
  • protected glazed surfaces to manage solar gain,
  • warm materials ensuring the transition between old and contemporary.
The extension does not seek to dominate the existing, but to complement the initial structure by bringing light and fluidity of circulation.

Interior Courtyard and Climate Adaptation

The courtyard was redesigned as a central space of the project. In the Mediterranean climate of the Alpes-Maritimes, seasonal management is crucial. The layout includes:
  • outdoor kitchen,
  • shaded areas,
  • bioclimatic pergolas,
  • modular relaxation spaces.
The objective was twofold: guarantee summer comfort through control of solar gains and allow extended use in winter thanks to thermal inertia and adapted protections. The courtyard thus becomes a natural extension of the interior spaces.

A Measured Intervention in a Sensitive Territory

In Valbonne, as throughout the Alpes-Maritimes, the transformation of an old house is not solely an architectural gesture. It involves:
  • local regulatory understanding,
  • climatic adaptation specific to the French Riviera,
  • heritage reading of the existing fabric,
  • coherent budget optimization.
This project illustrates an approach based on prior analysis and precision of choices, where each decision — preserve, transform or extend — responds to a balance between use, heritage and investment.

Before investing, some places deserve to be understood.

We intervene upstream, where the decision precedes the project and where value is revealed through insightful observation.
